Deep in a Wyoming mine, hell awaits. Former cattle driver, Rough Rider and current New York City cop Nat Blackburn is given an offer he can't refuse by President Teddy Roosevelt. Tales of gold in the abandoned mining town of Hecla, in the Deep Rock Hills, abound. The only problem-those who go seeking their fortune never return. Roosevelt's own troops are among the missing, and the President wants to know their fate - and find the gold. Along with his constant companion, Teta, a hired gun with a thirst for adventure, Nat travels to a barren land where even animals dare not tread. Along the way, they are joined by a Selma, a fiery and beautiful woman in search of her brother who was swallowed up by Hecla years earlier. Hecla is an eerie ghost town, its cemetery filled with crooked tombstones, the dusty streets scored by tumbleweed, the windows of the abandoned houses like eyes, following their every move. Terrifying wraiths flit throughout the town at night. Settling into a vacant home, Nat, Teta and Selma are approached by strange, black eyed children who then disappear like twin vapors. A trip to the mine ends with them galloping for their lives, chased by immense, hairy wild men. No, Hecla is far from abandoned - it's teeming with the supernatural, strange beasts and phantoms both luring them deeper into the mystery and driving them away from the mine. Only when a strange preacher and his hulking mute assistant arrive (on a Godly mission after hearing the blaring horns of Revelation) do they realize they cannot leave the town's borders, an invisible wall refusing to let them go. There's only one thing to do - plumb the chilling depths of the ghost mine and find the source of Hecla's bizarre power. What they stumble upon is a hellish battle of underworld forces while being tortured by the ghosts of their checkered pasts. There's a mystery in Hecla thousands of years old. Solving it could spell the end of the world. FLAME TREE PRESS is the new fiction imprint of Flame Tree Publishing. It’s another Shea book for Barb and I as we also decided to read Ghost Mines this month. So after you read mine go check out her blog and see what she thought!

What I thought

Ghost Mines is a historical western horror and though I wasn’t sure where it was going for most of it and it had some weird creatures and moments I really enjoyed this one.

It starts out with Nat being called in to see President Teddy Roosevelt, Nat was one of Roosevelt’s Rough Riders and a good soldier turned policeman. He wants him to go and check out a place in Wyoming called Hecla as there are rumors of gold being in the mountains and it has some mines. He had sent a troop up there but they never came back and he is wanting to know what happened to them. Nat asked if he can bring his friend Teta and both of them take off for Wyoming.

They get to Laramie for supplies and horses and the old man who was giving him the horses almost took them back when he found out where they were headed. It’s here that we meet Selma for the first time, her husband and brothers had went to the mines but never came back. So it’s sounding like it’s not a great place to go.

Once there a lot of really bizarre things happen, in the mines and outside of the mines. Selma comes to try and get them to change their mines as she kind of likes Nat, but they won’t go. Then when they decide they want to go they can’t as the place won’t let them. Then comes two guys in a car saying they heard the trumpets of Armageddon blow and are there to help. Matthias is a preacher and Angus is a person who hears spirits. Like I said a lot of bizarre things happen. I can’t say much more without giving away things but I really had no clue what was going on till the book was almost over and sometimes I was worried about it not having a good ending but it did.

I really liked Nat and Teta, they were real hard core cowboy types. Selma was pretty tough, and I could take or leave Matthias but I really like Angus. You did have to suspend your disbelief a lot with this story because it was kind of over the top at times and being that they are in the old west and you can’t just go to the local store for ammo they seemed to almost never run out. 🙂 Kind of like in the movies…lol. They also got beat up a lot by creatures and seem to keep on ticking like a timex!

Overall, I really enjoyed it and if you like horror novels then I think you might find this one interesting.

(I do think I like his shorter romp and chomp books more but this wasn’t bad.) 🙂

Full of interesting creatures and I enjoyed it! 4 stars! @huntershea1 @flametreepress #horrornovel Click To Tweet

  1. I still remember you messaging me and saying that Mathias must be praying for bullets because they aren’t running out. How true! I enjoyed this one as well and it was almost a 5/5 read for me.
