Atlanta was always a dangerous city. Now, as waves of magic and technology compete for supremacy, it’s a place caught in a slow apocalypse, where monsters spawn among the crumbling skyscrapers and supernatural factions struggle for power and survival.
Eight years ago, Julie Lennart left Atlanta to find out who she was. Now she’s back with a new face, a new magic, and a new name—Aurelia Ryder—drawn by the urgent need to protect the family she left behind. An ancient power is stalking her adopted mother, Kate Daniels, an enemy unlike any other, and a string of horrifying murders is its opening gambit.
If Aurelia’s true identity is discovered, those closest to her will die. So her plan is simple: get in, solve the murders, prevent the prophecy from being fulfilled, and get out without being recognized. She expected danger, but she never anticipated that the only man she’d ever loved could threaten everything.
One small misstep could lead to disaster. But for Aurelia, facing disaster is easy; it’s relationships that are hard.

Barb and I buddy read the Kate Daniels series and Julie was one of our favorite characters so when we seen she was getting a spin off we had to jump in and try it. 🙂 Check out my review and then go see what she thought at Booker T’s Reviews.

Here is what I thought

Blood Heir starts when it’s been about eight years since the Kate Daniels series. Something transpired in the end of Kate Daniels series and made Julie decide that she needed to leave. Kate was her adopted mother as she found her when doing a job and the girls mother was killed. Kate and Curran raised her and because of something that happened Julie ends up with some magic of her own. Trying to do this review without spoiling the other series!

Julie has spent those eight years basically learning how to control her magic with her grandmother, but you also learn that she has kept in touch with Kate through phone calls but she hasn’t been home. Then one day her friend who is an oracle tells her a prophesy that basically says this big bad is going to eventually try and kill Kate. So she has been spending a few years trying to alter the outcome and has even defeated Moloch but he regenerates and it doesn’t alter the prophesy. During one of these altercations she takes Molochs eye and puts in her eye and it changes her. It took a long while for this change to happen but when she comes out of it she no longer looks like Julie and she calls herself Aurelia Ryder.

Now she has been told that she must go back to Atlanta to find out what happened to a priest who was looking into an artifact. She can not have any contact with Kate or it will be Kate’s death and so she has to try and not have much contact with those who might know her even though she has a new face. Though she manages to stay away from some she can’t keep away from a lot of those who remember her even if she is different. You might change your face but you can’t change your attitude and mannerisms.

When she gets there she goes to Nick who is the Knight protector and tells him she wants the case and mentions a name that gets her access to being a Knight while she is there. While trying to investigate she finds out that she is not the only one who is wanting to learn what happened. Ascanio from the Bouda pack is sniffing around and giving her grief and it’s a good thing he doesn’t recognize her. Also it seems that Derek, a wolf from her past, is also looking into things. Derek use to be a part of The Pack in Atlanta but she learned that he left, but now he is also sniffing around.

The more she tries to just get into Atlanta and find out what happened so she can leave it seems the more entangled she gets into things in Atlanta. She finds some street kids and so of feels responsible for a couple of them, one whom gets badly beaten because of her. She finds out all about how things are going with the Pack she use to know so well as well as how things have changed with Derek, as he has a bit of magic now.

There is a lot to take in during this first installment of the spin off and some of it feels confusing as it seems that not only Julie is having contact with some people that where pretty much the bad guys throughout Kate Daniels series but it seems others are talking to them too (can’t really say who as spoilers for Kate Daniels series). It’s just seems like I missed a lot in eight years. I know there are some novella’s and I would like to check them out. I really need the one about Derek!

I always liked Julie, and this version of Julie isn’t really that much different she is just a lot more magicked up and older and better trained. She still has a Kate like attitude and snark which I enjoy. It was also fun getting some of the side characters from the Kate Daniels series in this as well. Even though it was different it felt like a bit of home being back in Atlanta.

Hopefully I explained things kind of without spoiling anything for Kate Daniels series!

I can’t wait to read the next one and hope I don’t have to wait forever for it!!!! If you enjoyed Kate Daniels then you will want to pick up this one!

  1. I meant to pick this one up back when it first came out. It’s bad, I read Kate Daniel’s only a year or so ago and I already can’t remember what happened to Julie 🙈. Oops! Will this book remind me? I need to grab it in audio. Great review!
