Top Ten Mysteries (2018)

December 24, 2018 Misc. 4

I gave you my list of favorite cozy mysteries so here is a list of my top ten favorite mystery that are not cozy. 🙂 Of those kind I read about 40 or so. I am calling them mysteries but some might be labeled thriller but I always call them mysteries…lol.

This is one of my favorite historical mystery series! If you haven’t read it then what is wrong with you! Read it! :)This is book #3 and I liked that in this one we get information on what happened between Stoker and Caroline (she is a B*@&$) 🙂 I want to smack this author for giving us such great sexual tension between the characters but keeping them at arm’s length!!! She is killing me, I want Stoker and Veronica to get together!!! Can’t wait for Barb and I to buddy read #4!

My first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. Left me with a bit of a cliffhanger! I am bummed I couldn’t get my hands on an ARC of the second one so I will have to wait and hope my library gets it! This one is about Stevie who likes to solve mysteries and she gets invited to this fancy school because she wants to try and solve the 30 year old mystery surrounding that place when another murder happens while she is there. Patiently trying to wait for book two!

This is one of my favorite series so I knew I would have one on this list. I listened to this one and Captive on the Fens and enjoyed them both but this one is the most memorable one. It’s about DI Nikki Galena’s friend who was locked in a cellar and it was a very traumatic experience and she also could have sworn there was someone else down there and he confessed to murder, but he was never found. Now she thinks she is being stalked and nobody is sure if she really is being stalk or it was because of the trauma she had that has her seeing things. It was a good one and I still need to listen to three more to get myself caught up!

This is the first book in the Gilded Age Mystery series and even though I also listened to the second one and liked it I figured it was best to go with the first one. In this one Prudence learns that her fiance is killed in a snowstorm but she is not real sure it was an accident so she teams up with his friend and ex pinkerton agent Geoffery to find out what happened. Can’t wait to listen to the third one that is out!

This one my first foray into Karin Slaughter and I really enjoyed it. Slaughter has a way of really writing some gruesome but engaging stories. This one is the first in the Will Trent series and about a series of women being brutally murdered and Will Trent is brought in to help. There is a veteran detective who is trying to solve things and a guy just out of prison in the middle of everything and boy did the ending surprise me! Need to read the next one in this series!

The second book in the Kat Holloway series and a new favorite series. I really enjoyed this one though I wanted more of Daniel and it took a while before his character was in it…lol. I still want to know what he does for a living!! I guess I will have to wait like Kat to find out. In this one Kat’s employer as her to help prove her friend wasn’t stealing art and then it goes from there to something else and Daniel gets involve and he is in the middle of something himself. Can’t wait for the next one but have to wait till like June…sighs.

The second book in the Wrexford and Sloane series and I really like this series! If you like Veronica Speedwell then you will like this one! Lord Wrexford find the dead body of an important inventor and then he is asked to look into it by the widow. He doesn’t really want to and he is not the police, but he did help solve a murder and so he decides too. With the help of Charlotte Sloane a satiric cartoonist, who goes by AJ Quill, that he met in the first book. She uses her cartoons to try and find out who the killer is with the help of a couple young street kids. I found out on the authors website that she has been asked to do two more so I am really glad. Now to just wait!!!

I am glad I decided to try this series after Barb kept telling me I needed too…lol. I really enjoyed it. The author takes actual killers and their crimes and puts her own spin on it so you can sort of see how it matches if you know anything about  the one she is writing about. This one is the Zodiac Killer and in the book it’s The Prophet and he has a plan. A plan he has been patiently waiting to finish. The Prophet haunted Caitlin’s father and now it’s been 20 years and he is back just in time for Caitlin to get the case. It was pretty intense and gripping and I had to keep reading to find out how it would end. I also read Into the Black Nowhere which is book two and it was good too. Now I can’t wait to get to the next one coming out in 2019! It’s called The Dark Corners of the Night.

Book one in the Grant County series. I also read book two and it was just as good! A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it’s only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer’s twisted work becomes clear. Her ex-husband, police chief Jeffery Tolliver has to work with her to try and figure things out. One of the detectives Lena has to deal with the fact that her sister is one of the victims. Karin Slaughter isn’t afraid to pull any punches when it comes to her books!

The second book in the Scotland Murder Squad series and it was really interesting. It’s about a strange town they call “Black Country” because of the bad things that happen their and they are very superstitious and so when some people go missing they think it is do to a legend. The Murder Squad is called in and Day and Hammersmith have to figure it out. I really need to get to the third book since I have it!!

Just catching up on some of these series could have me reading a while…lol. I guess it’s safe to say I really like Historical Mysteries since they make up half the list…lol.

So these are my top favorite mysteries I read this year. What are some of your favorite reads this year?

I read the newest in the Gilded Age Mysteries a few weeks ago and really loved it. It’s definitely a series I want to go back and read the earlier books. Joy Ellis is on my list of authors to read this year and I really need to continue with the Veronica Speedwell series. The first was SO good!
