Senator Buckmaster Hamilton stood on the second-floor outdoor balcony of the sprawling Hamilton Ranch house and surveyed the engagement party going on below him.
What I thought of this book
I normally prefer my romances to be about a couple who doesn’t know each other at first or it’s been a long time since they seen each other. So this was a little different because it was about a couple who were engaged to be married when things start to fall apart.
Livie has been in love with Cooper probably since the first time she seen him when he came to work on her fathers ranch. Now her dream of marrying him are coming true, but there is just one problem. She is afraid her dream is about to shatter because of an incident that happened a few months earlier. One that she can’t remember fully and now she is pregnant.
Only after getting a couple blackmail notes did she decide to tell Cooper about what happened and the fact that she is pregnant. She told him at their engagement party! Of all places, not sure what Livie was thinking. I can understand her fears about losing Cooper and not remembering what happened that one night or that the baby might not be his, but I don’t like how she handled things at all. I don’t blame Cooper for being mad or giving her the cold shoulder.
Cooper is stubborn and prideful but he has a rough childhood and worked hard for everything he got. Unlike Livie who has a senator for a father. He doesn’t fit into her world and some times is not sure if they should get married but he loves her. He wants what they have to be theirs so he doesn’t want to take anything from Mr. Hamilton. I can totally understand that when it seems like nobody else can, not even Livie. I honestly think Cooper is taking things better than most would, but he still loves her and needs to work things out.
With the blackmail looming and not knowing who is doing the blackmailing it’s putting Livie in danger. Who is it that is blackmailing her and Cooper and why? It seems a bit weird that it started right after they announced their engagement. I had a few suspects so it was interesting to see who it really was.
In this story I think I really liked Cooper more than Livie and really felt sorry for him. I hated how Livie did things and how she made him feel so bad. I wasn’t even sure if I wanted them to have a happy ever after and that is really bad. It’s like she can’t understand why he is backing off and when he tries to reach out, like ask her to stay with him at his cabin so he can protect her, she doesn’t seem to want too. Oh she just made me mad.
Her sister are so snooty that when their story comes up I really hope they find someone to put them in their places. Out of all of them so far I must say I like Livie more than them and that is saying something.
I loved the suspense and it’s true to form for a B.J. Daniels novel but it didn’t really seem like a romance since the couple was already together. It was more like a suspenseful drama because of everything that was being thrown at the couple and you just had to wait and see if they stayed together.
I think because I haven’t read the first series that this is a spin off sort of had me missing some things. Like Frank the sheriff and his crazy daughter..or is she really his? I missed Frank’s story which I know is in Mercy which is the last book in the Beartooth Montana series because I have it and my book OCD wouldn’t let me finish it cause I keep thinking I had to start from the beginning..which I will be doing as I have Unforgiven on audio. I love B.J. Daniels but with series like this I just think they must be read in order. So those who love her stories and have kept up with the other series might enjoy this more than someone just coming into it. If you are OCD about series like me it will drive you crazy. 🙂
