USA Today bestselling author Marty Wingate’s Potting Shed series continues as expert gardener Pru Parke digs up a Nazi warplane—and a fresh murder.
Texas transplant Pru Parke has put down roots in England, but she never dreamed she’d live in a grand place such as Greenoak. When her former employers offer Pru and her new husband, former Detective Chief Inspector Christopher Pearse, the use of their nineteenth-century estate while they’re away for a year, she jumps at the chance. Sweetening the deal is the prospect of further bonding with her long-lost brother, Simon, who happens to be Greenoak’s head gardener. But the majestic manor has at least one skeleton in its closet—or, rather, its garden.
Working on renovations to the extensive grounds, siblings Pru and Simon squabble about everything from boxwood to bay hedges. But when the removal of a half-dead tree turns up the wreckage of a World War II–era German fighter plane and a pile of bones, the arguments stop. That is, until a rival from Simon’s past pays a surprise visit and creates even more upheaval. It’s suddenly clear someone is unhappy their secrets have been unearthed. Still, Pru’s not about to sit back and let Simon take the fall for the dirty deed without a fight.
The large terra-cotta pot, weathered from the seasons, sported an inch-wide crack that strained at the wire wrapped round it’s circumference.
What I thought of this book
This series just gets more interest with each book! So it could have a few spoilers if you have read the other books as with a lot of cozies they do have continuing stories in them.
Pru and Christopher are now married and Mr. and Mrs. Wilson has let them stay in Greenoak while they are away for a long holiday. It’s to allow her time to get to know her brother Simon who she just found and is a gardener just like her. So they are working together at Greenoak on the garden for the Wilson’s.
Then they were digging and found a plane with a skeleton from WWII. Which is sort of cool as they are getting really to celebrate the Christmas fete and they are decorating in WWII stuff and everything. Simon is panicked cause he has a magazine who wants to come and check out the brother/sister pair that are gardeners.
Christopher’s sister asks him and Pru to let their son Orlando come and stay with them as he had gotten in a little trouble and thought he might need some time away. At first he wasn’t up for gardening and staying with them but then he starts to like it. Pru gets a taste of what it would be like to have a kid around as she never had any.
Then Pru finds a dead body in the hole that was dug where the plane they found was and it’s of a guy who had once dated Polly and Simon ends up being a suspect. Christopher isn’t a DCI right now as they moved but he is helping with the investigation, but he actually gives Pru permission to snoop around as he knows she will probably get more information than him. Normally he doesn’t like her involved as he doesn’t want to her getting into trouble.
For the first time I was pretty sure I knew who the killer was and it was fun finding out if I was right. I am not a huge fan of WWII things but it was only a bit of the story line. I really enjoyed the introduction to Orlando as it gave Pru a little bit of what it takes to keep a teenager busy. He also helps them make a website for their garden, old school meets new school. 🙂
As always I enjoyed this story a lot and I have loved all of Marty Wingates cozy books so far and can’t wait for the next one! Pru went from not having a lot of family to gaining a brother, husband and a lot of new friends and it’s been fun going along with her as she deals with it all.
If you like cozies and an English setting then you will like this series.
