Check in for some Southern hospitality in Plantation Shudders, the Cajun Country series debut from Ellen Byron.
It's the end of the summer and Prodigal Daughter Maggie Crozat has returned home to her family's plantation-turned-bed-and-breakfast in Louisiana. The Crozats have an inn full of guests for the local food festival--elderly honeymooners, the Cajun Cuties, a mysterious stranger from Texas, a couple of hipster lovebirds, and a trio of Georgia frat boys. But when the elderly couple keels over dead within minutes of each other--one from very unnatural causes-- Maggie and the others suddenly become suspects in a murder.
With the help of Bo Durand, the town's handsome new detective, Maggie must investigate to clear her name while holding the family business together at the same time. And the deeper she digs, the more she wonders: are all of the guests really there for a vacation or do they have ulterior motives? Decades-old secrets and stunning revelations abound in Ellen Byron's charming cozy debut, Plantation Shudders.
Maggie flew down southern Louisiana’s River Road in the red ’64 Falcon convertible that she’d inherited from her late grandfather.
What I thought of this book
This is my first book by this author but it sure won’t be the last as I really enjoyed this Cajun Mystery.
There is nothing better than a good southern murder mystery, especially one that comes with yummy recipes in the back. Yes, you heard me recipes! 🙂
Like a lot of plantation owners, it’s getting harder and harder to keep them going. Maggie’s family had to give up one plantation, but they have managed to turn the other into a B&B. The Crozats have been verily getting by with their B&B and so they are excited that they have all their slots filled up during the annual fet let celebration. But things go downhill quickly when two of their guest turn up dead. One dies of natural causes but the other was murdered.
It gives the local police chief great pleasure to do anything he can to ruin the Crozats, even if that means being slack on the investigation. The Durands and the Crozats have a long history and it seems they think the Crozats put a curse on the Durands so they have bad relationships. So when Maggie finds out that they were getting a new detective to work the case she was elated until she finds out it’s another Durand.
Though she quickly finds out that this nice looking Durand is nothing like his cousin and actually likes to find out who really commits the crime. When they start digging into the old ladies background and that of her guest Maggie finds out that just about everyone who came to Crozats had an ulterior motive for doing so.
This was a really fun mystery and I must say that I actually didn’t figure out who done it. Though I should have probably known who it was but it caught me unaware which I like. It has a great pace and now I really can’t wait for the next one. 🙂
The characters were a lot of fun! I love Maggie, she wants to be an artist but like most she would be starving if she didn’t do something else, so she came back home to help out her parents and she also works as a tour guide at Doucet, the plantation that used to be in her family. You don’t want to get on this southern ladies bad side.
The side characters are a lot of fun as well. I really love Maggies Gran! She was a hoot! I also liked Bo Durand, and was so glad he was a lot different from his cousin though it seems his cousin might give him problems if he found out that Bo likes Maggie. Just a lot of great characters and I can’t wait to get to know more about them.
Definitely a recommended read for anyone who loves cozy mysteries.
