Halloween brings more tricks than treats for costume shop owner Margo Tamblyn in the second in a new cozy series from the national bestselling author of the Material Witness Mysteries.  Halloween conjures up big business for Margo Tamblyn’s costume shop, Disguise DeLimit, but this year, the holiday comes knocking with serious trouble. Venture capitalist Paul Haverford plans to rezone historic downtown into a glitzy commercial area which would push out local business. Margo is set on saving her family’s store, especially after a nasty run-in with the chain-store tycoon, but after Haverford’s body is discovered during a spooky party at the derelict Alexandria Hotel, Margo finds herself dressed as the police’s prime suspect.   Anxious to clear her name, Margo begins hunting down anyone who might have wanted Haverford dead. Between all of his malicious maneuverings, the murdered mogul had buckets of people anxious to see him gone. Now, Margo will have to use every trick in the book to find a cloaked killer—before someone else winds up wearing a death shroud...

What I thought of this book

I really enjoyed the first book in this series so I knew I would like this one! What is not to love about a Halloween themed cozy mystery set in a costume shop! 🙂

Margo is still getting used to running the costume shop on her own now that her dad has decided to travel around looking for cool things to bring back to the shop. She wants him to be proud of her so she doesn’t want anything to go wrong. Of course, it does and in spades.

Halloween is very popular and taken very serious in Proper City and Disguise DeLimit has always had a bit hand in that. There is always a kick-off party and a costume contest, which they win every year. This time, though someone has bought the hotel that it was going to be at and has stated that only business bought up by this man can be eligible to enter a contest. They are not one of those stores.

She didn’t learn about it until the day of the party so she goes and gets all mad at the man, then goes to the party anyway. So of course, he is going to end up dead and Margo is going to be the prime suspect. There are plenty of people that might want to see Paul dead but it seems like Nancy (Margo’s secret boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend) isn’t very willing to look for another suspect, so of course, Margo must find out who the killer is.

I like Margo but at times she really drives me a bit crazy as she is a little whiny when it comes to her relationship with Tak. They are adults and secret relationships just don’t work and it drove me crazy. I like Tak but at times I was like speak up, tell him you’re in a relationship with Margo, don’t just let her go hang out with the guy…err.

I love the secondary characters, Kirby the young man who works with her, her father, and best friend Bobby are all a lot of fun.

It has a good mystery as I was really hopping around on who I thought might have done it. I did kind of have my suspicions on who it was but had to wait and see if I was right. 🙂

Overall, it was a lot of fun and if you like cozies then you need to give it a try!!

This is such a good mystery and a wonderful look at a shop that I wish I could visit, Kirby and the team are such great additions to the story. I laughed at the image of the eggs running the store…and the next day asking for money to replace their sheets!
