Geologist Petra Dee arrives in Wyoming looking for clues to her father's disappearance years before. What she finds instead is Temperance, a dying Western town with a gold rush past and a meth-infested present. But under the town's dust and quiet, an old power is shifting. When bodies start turning up - desiccated and twisted skeletons that Petra can't scientifically explain - her investigations land her in the middle of a covert war between the town's most powerful interests. Petra's father wasn't the only one searching for the alchemical secrets of Temperance, and those still looking are now ready to kill. Armed with nothing but shaky alliances, a pair of antique guns, and a relic she doesn't understand, the only thing Petra knows for sure is that she and her coyote sidekick are going to have to move fast, or die next.

First Line

The Raven saw it first. His dark eye scraped the horizon, scouring the earth for movement in the lengthening shadows.

What I thought of this book

This was my first novel by this author and it was really strange. I have not read any books about alchemy so I really don’t know much about that but I do know now that it is some messed up strangeness.

Petra is a geologist and she has come to Temperance to get away from what happened on the oil rig that she was on. She also knows that this was the last place she ever heard from her father and she is hoping to find him. What she finds is a town full of strange things that is hard for her scientific mind to wrap around.

Sal Rutherford seems to run the town and has his minions to do his bidding for him. Gabriel is the one who runs the ranch hands and Petra meets him the first time when Frankie beats the crap out of him. She also notices later than his blood glows in the dark. In the daylight it looks like real blood but at night it glows.

She makes friends with a Coyote on her first night there when the coyote wants her to come outside and see what he dug up. It’s an artifact from the founder of the town who was an alchemist. ย There is another alchemist in town who wants what she has found and also wants what is on Sal Rutherford’s land.

So Petra sort of ends up in the middle of two different men who want to run the town and use the magic of alchemy and ends up in a fight for her own life. Petra is a pretty tough character and I liked her, she didn’t back down from anything but at times I thought she was a little two head strong for her own good.

Dark Alchemy was just one really strange and slightly creepy read but at the same time I could never really tell where it was going and then it just ends. I think this would have made a great series but it might be cause I didn’t like how it ended. I didn’t like what happened with one of the characters and if you have read it you probably know who I am talking about.

That being said I did enjoy reading and I think if you are into strange, weird, urban fantasy type books (honestly I don’t now were this fits), then you might enjoy this one. ๐Ÿ™‚

I might have to read this. I laughed my ass off at this line “I have not read any books about alchemy so I really donโ€™t know much about that but I do know now that it is some messed up strangeness.” I’m just curious now more than anything. And I do like dark fantasy. And sometimes weird. We’ll see.
