A homicide detective’s violent family history repeats itself in #1 Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh’s novel of murder, secrets, and retribution.
For more than twenty-five years, Philadelphia homicide detective Bree Taggert has tucked away the nightmarish childhood memories of her parents’ murder-suicide…Until her younger sister, Erin, is killed in a crime that echoes that tragic night: innocent witnesses and a stormy marriage that ended in gunfire. There’s just one chilling difference. Erin’s husband, Justin, has vanished.
Bree knows how explosive the line between love and hate can be, yet the evidence against her troubled brother-in-law isn’t adding up. Teaming up with Justin’s old friend, former sheriff’s investigator and K-9 handler Matt Flynn, Bree vows to uncover the secrets of her sister’s life and death, as she promised Erin’s children. But as her investigation unfolds, the danger hits close to home. Once again, Bree’s family is caught in a death grip. And this time, it could be fatal for her.

Here is what I thought

My first time reading this author but it won’t be the last as I really enjoyed this one!

Bree is a detective in Philly and she has had a rough life with her father killing her mother when she was about eight and she had to hid her little sister and brother. Now she has had a frantic call from her sister Erin so when she can’t get ahold of her she rushes back to her hometown and her sisters place only to find cops around it. She finds out that her sister has been killed and it looks like it could be deja vu because her husband is considered the suspect as it looks as if he has ran.

Matt doesn’t believe that his friend Justin has anything to do with Erin’s death, yes he was struggling with a drug habit but he was getting better. Or at least Matt thought he was. Matt use to be a K-9 officer but after a friendly fire accident he had to be retired from the force along with his dog Brody. Matt wants to get to the bottom of things and doesn’t trust the acting chief after what happened to him. Matt teams up with Bree to find out what happened to her sister and find where Justin has fled.

I really like Bree, she is tough but by no means perfect. She is single and now thrown into a situation of taking care of two kids as well as the need to find her sister’s killer. I also like Matt who is very loyal to his friend and just knew he couldn’t be the killer, even though he had a few doubts. I also really liked Dana who was Bree’s homicide partner who was retiring but did so even earlier to come help Bree with the kids. I think another favorite has to be Marge even though she wasn’t in the book much but I liked her moxy! She is the sheriff departments receptionist.

You get a few chapters about the killer and I must say that as I read them I kept thinking to myself, I just no there is going to be a twist at the end. My liking this story was going to be based on if I was right or not and it didn’t go down the boring trail and it gave me a twist even if not that shocking. It did deliver on that so I am glad.

It’s suppose to be a romantic suspense but there was no romance at least in this one, it is the first in a series. I would say this was more the getting to know each other and I think I like you phase than romance. So more a mystery crime novel.

I really enjoyed this one and will most definitely being trying other books by this author.
