“True Detective” meets H.P. Lovecraft in this chilling novel of murder, mystery, andslow-mounting dread from acclaimed author Mary SanGiovanni . . .
It begins with a freak snowstorm in May. Hit hardest is the rural town of Colby, Connecticut. Schools and businesses are closed, powerlines are down, and police detective Jack Glazier has found a body in the snow. It appears to be the victim of a bizarre ritual murder. It won't be the last. As the snow piles up, so do the sacrifices. Cut off from the rest of the world, Glazier teams up with an occult crime specialist to uncover a secret society hiding in their midst.
The gods they worship are unthinkable. The powers they summon are unstoppable. And the things they will do to the good people of Colby are utterly, horribly unspeakable…

Jack Glazier had worked Colby Township Homicide for going on nine long New England winters, but he had never seen blood freeze quite like that.
What I thought of this book
This is my first book by Mary SanGiovanni but I know it won’t be the last. This book was full of a lot of action and different from anything I have read lately.
I love winter settings for horrors, it just seems like it adds this intense layer to what is already a horrible situation. In the town of Colby, Connecticut they had no clue what was about to hit when a freak snow storm hit them in June. Detective Jack Glazier had never seen anything like it and it just felt wrong, he didn’t know at the time how wrong it really was, until after he gets a call to the first body.
It seems a cult is in the town called The Hands of the Black Star and they have created the snow as part of the cleansing of the town. In the snow are monsters, horrible monsters and they are killing everyone. It’s a good thing for Jack they know someone who knows all about cults and rituals. Kathy knows first-hand the cruelty of a cult and knows a lot about the HBS.
While Teagan and Kathy are working on a spell to close the door that was opened, Jack goes after his family and Morris gets himself in a whole bunch of trouble and it all gets pretty intense!
So this one might not be for the faint of heart. If you don’t like a lot of gruesome killing then you might want to pass. It wasn’t as bad as it could have been but there is ritualistic murders and monster killing people by stabbing them through the heart and it’s men, women, and children. The creatures are cleansing the town so they don’t care who they kill. Snowmen snatching people, etc.
It was pretty much non-stop action from beginning to end and I really enjoyed it. The characters are flawed and the only one we get a lot of background on is Kathy but you still really want to see them all survive. Jack and Teagan are partners who catch the first murder and it throws them into a lot of chaos. Jack is not sure about bringing Kathy in cause he thinks she is unstable but Teagan likes her and doesn’t mind bringing her in. They really don’t have much choice as she is an expert on ritualistic killings, cults and anything that goes bump in the night. Even this stuff frightens her.
If you like suspense or horror type novels then I think you will enjoy this one! Great for this time of year! 🙂
