Someone is dressed to kill in the debut Costume Shop Mystery from the national bestselling author of the Material Witness mysteries.  No sooner does former magician’s assistant Margo Tamblyn return home to Proper City, Nevada, to run Disguise DeLimit, the family-owned costume shop, than she gets her first big order. Wealthy nuisance Blitz Manners needs forty costumes for a detective-themed birthday bash. As for Blitz himself, his Sherlock Holmes is to-die-for—literally—when, in the middle of the festivities, Margo’s friend and party planner Ebony Welles is caught brandishing a bloody carving knife over a very dead Blitz.   For Margo, clearing Ebony’s name is anything but elementary, especially after Ebony flees town. Now Margo is left to play real-life detective in a town full of masked motives, cloaked secrets, and veiled vendettas. But as she soon learns, even a killer disguise can't hide a murderer in plain sight for long.

What I thought of this book.

Margo comes back home to see after her father for a few days when he had a heart attack. He owns a costume shop and Margo had grown up there and has an inventive wardrobe style. A guy named Blitz comes in there demanding that they throw his party that he is having in a few days and wants all the costumes done by tomorrow. He was arrogant, rude and overall unlike able so it’s no real surprise when he is found dead at his party.

Ebony, a lady that was sort of like a mother to Margo while growing up was the one throwing the party and she finds her standing over the body holding the knife. Margo knows that Ebony couldn’t have done it but it doesn’t help things when Ebony takes off out of town. There are plenty of people who could have done it.

I really enjoyed the characters in this story. Margo is pretty cool and she dresses like she works in a costume shop! She has a pretty cool personality. I can’t wait to learn more about her and the other residents of Proper City. I a especially interested in learning more about Tak.

Though there was a lot more going on with the costume shop than mystery, it still had a good mystery within the story. I really thought this one was a lot of fun and I will be checking out other books from this author.

I knew I was going to like this one from the first page as it made me chuckle. If you love fun, quirky cozy mysteries then you will enjoy this new series.

I have read some coffee shop ones they are good. You should try The Tourist Trap mystery series by Lynn Cahoon, the MC owns a coffee shop/bookstore. 🙂 It’s one of my favorite series.

  1. My pre-ordered copy of this one just arrived and I can’t wait to read it! It sounds like a fun one and I like that the mainc haracetr works in a costume shop. I like the sound of how the mystery is wel done, but there’s also more to the story than the mystery. Great review!
