Retro Movie Night ~The House on Haunted Hill & Nightmare Castle

October 10, 2019 Movie Review 9

Retro Movie Night will be featuring horror movies from the decades of the 50’s thru the 80’s. Thought it would be fun to do for the Halloween season.

The House on Haunted Hill (1959) starring Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Richard Long. Directed by William Castle.

Tagline: Acclaimed The Super-Shocker Of The Century!

All this time I never knew that the original movie was pretty much about a man getting revenge on his wife and her lover! It was not a spooky paranormal like they portray in the 1999 version! That only only has the name in common and this one is far better!

What I love about old horror movies is that they use ambiance instead of blood and gore, or huge scare tactics to scare people. The right musical score along with a spooky atmosphere and you have a pretty good spooky movie. Also Vincent Price on his own is spooky with his awesome voice!

In The House on Haunted Hill Frederick invites a group of people to his house for a party to entertain his wife. He is paying them money if they can make it through the night. Right off the bat you get a sense that Frederick and his wife are not on good terms. When strange things start to happen it seems to center on one young lady in particular making her swear that the house is haunted and something is after her.

The ending of this movie was great. I thought the wife was very stupid and sort of deserved what happens to her in the end! You should totally check it out it’s a great movie!!

**Note: The House on Haunted Hill is not to be confused with Shirley Jackson’s book The Haunting of Hill House these are two different works with similar and confusing titles. This movie came out the year that Jackson wrote her book but the adaptations of Hill House are The Haunting (both 1963 and 1999) as well as the new netflix movie The Haunting of Hill House, which is actually nothing like the book.)

Nightmare Castle (1965) starring Barbara Steele, Paul Muller, Rik Battaglia. Directed by Italian film maker Mario Caiano.

Taglines: So weird! …So shocking! Do YOU dare see it! 🙂

I picked this one to go with the above film because they have a similar tale though I didn’t realize it going into it.

This one is about a deranged scientist who catches his wife and the gardener together so he tortures them by chaining them up and beating them. He kills them and then goes on to marry another woman who looks an awful like like his late wife but with blonde hair. He is doing experiments on her as the man is crazy! Anyway, something happens and his dead wife and her lover come back to haunt and get their revenge!

I found this one to be interesting but not as good as The House on Haunted Hill but it still had it’s interesting bits. I thought the make up on the dead was pretty cool for back then. Again this one has the cool music and atmosphere to make it a fun one to watch!

What do you think of these too? The trailers are great! Do you have any classic favorites?

Though the House on Haunted Hill is not actually Hill House (That is the movie The Haunting), but you should totally watch The House on Haunted Hill again!! Yeah that second trailer was kind of all over but it was an italian director so maybe something got lost there…lol.

You are thinking of the Haunting of Hill House which is not the same as The House on Haunted Hill, two different plots. 🙂 The Haunting and it’s remake are based on Hill HOuse and tried watching the netflix series and it just went places the book never did and I never finished it. It’s like a remake in name only…lol.

If you like Vincent Price you should definitely give it a try because so far this one is my favorite of his.
