In the second installment of Maria DiRico's new Catering Hall Mystery series, Mia Carina is back in the borough of Queens, in charge of the family catering hall Belle View Banquet Manor, and keeping her nonna company. But some events--like murder at a shower--are not the kind you can schedule...
Mia's newly pregnant friend Nicole plans to hold a shower at Belle View--but Nicole also has to attend one that her competitive (and mysteriously rich) stepmother, Tina, is throwing at the fanciest place in Queens. It's a good chance for Mia to snoop on a competitor, especially since doing a search for how to run a catering hall can get you only so far.
Mia tags along at the lavish party, but the ambience suffers at Nicole's Belle View shower when a fight breaks out--and then, oddly, a long-missing and valuable stolen painting is unwrapped by the mom-to-be. Tina is clearly shocked to see it. But not as shocked as Mia is when, soon afterward, she spots the lifeless body of a party guest floating in the marina . . .Italian recipes included!
Mia is trying to make a good go at the event place that her father is runing. Even if it was owned by a mobster she wants her father to go clean and stay out of jail so she is going to do her very best to make sure the Belle View Banquet Manor is a success. It would help if they could keep murder of of it.
Mia’s friend Nicole is pregnant and she wants Mia to have a baby shower for her, but her stepmom who is always competting with Nicoles mom wants to have one at this fancy rich place. So Nicole is having two showers and things are not going well. Then at the shower hosted at Belle View Tina, the stepmom ends up dead and Mia finds out there is a nice list of people who might have wanted her dead.
I like the characters well enough but none of them stand out really as favorites. It did have a pretty decent mystery and I didn’t figure it out until things went down and the MC was figuring things out so that was cool.
This series is decent but it hasn’t became a series that I am super invested in but it’s only the second book so it might grow on me. It just isn’t as good as her other series under her other name.

Autumn in Blossom Valley means pumpkin patches are ripe and Winona Mae Montgomery and her Granny Smythe's cider shop is flourishing. But with this season comes...A FATAL HARVEST
The Fall Festival is in full swing. Civil War reenactors from three counties are partaking in Blossom Valley's tribute to John Brown. Blue Ridge Mountain foliage is in full bloom. And best of all is Jacob Potter's pumpkin farm where his hay rides, piglet races, pumpkin picking and corn maze are time-honored draws for locals and tourists alike. That's why it's such a shock when Mr. Potter is found dead, hidden under a tarp in the back of Winnie's pickup truck. This certainly betrays Potter's reputation as one of the town's most popular citizens. Fortunately, when it comes to solving a murder, no one has a patch on Winnie. Now, all eyes are on her to do it. Unfortunately, that includes those of the killer who'll do anything to keep an orchard full of secrets buried.
This was a lot of fun and a perfect read for fall as it’s set around Thanksgiving. I really enjoye the characters in this and loved seeing the relationship between Colton and Winnie move forward a little bit. I really liked Blake who is Colton’s brother and it was fun how he seemed to be there to check out Winnie because Colton wouldn’t talk about her enough but he did talk about her.
In this one Mr. Potter the guy who owns a popular pumpkin farm is found dead in the back of Winnie’s truck and so sleuthing begins and I was pretty surprised who the killer was!
This one also has a story arc from the previous books that gets resolved and so you really should start with the first book and I highly recommend you do. 🙂
