Mini Reviews #5

May 8, 2018 Book Reviews 6

Time is not on my side but I am still enjoying reading/listening to a lot of great books so I opted to do some mini reviews so that I can get them finished and done so I am not stressing. 🙂

 Captive on the Fens

A young woman’s body is found in a remote barn on the Fens. Before she was killed, one of her fingers had been cut off. Who is inflicting this violence and why? And can DI Nikki Galena stop them before anyone else suffers?

The young woman in the barn had been kept captive for some time. And the case shows strong similarities to an unsolved murder in Derbyshire. When another woman is found alive with similar injuries the case grows even more complicated.

At the same time, the Fenland police have received intelligence that the ruthless criminal Freddy Carver plans to make Greenborough the hub for his new enterprise. DI Nikki Galena is desperate to track down Freddie Carver and make sure that he does not put down roots in the Fens, but finding him is not easy. And what’s his connection to the kidnapped girls?

And who is the woman being held captive in a remote location? DI Nikki Galena must rally her team of detectives, while facing a traitor on the inside, in this captivating mystery which will have you gripped as Nikki races against time to save more than one victim, including someone she care deeply about.

This is one of my favorite British Crime series and like a lot of them it’s a bit on the dark side and always has more than one thing going on.

In this one it starts out with the murder of a young woman who looks as if she had been captive for a long time. As they start investigating they find another woman but she got away and is alive and they have no idea what is going on.

Then to further complicate things they get intel that Freddy Carver a really bad criminal and they are trying to figure out if he has anything to do with what has happened to these women. He is one bad dude! Then a guy comes in and swears that his sister has been kidnapped and he needs help and that nobody seems to be doing anything about it so Joseph tries to help him and the more they dig into his sister’s case the stranger things get.

I love Nikki and Joseph they make a great pairing. I kind of wish they would get together and I know they care for each other but I can also see why they try and keep it as a working partnership as they do work very well together.

It had a great mystery and the twist at the end was crazy just like they normally are which is why I love this series. You never know who the bad guy is going to end up being!

Armed and Fabulous

All Lexi wants to do is get through the day at her boring temp job with Green Hand Insurance. That’s until she discovers the vice president, Martin Dean, in a pool of blood and herself at the center of an investigation into insurance fraud.

Millions of dollars are missing, the chief suspect is dead and her mysterious, sexy, new boss is not what he seems.

Recruited by the joint task force working on the case, all Lexi has to do is work out who killed Dean and where the missing millions are. That’s easier said than done when her sister insists upon the baby shower to end all baby showers, her wise-ass cop family just wants to keep her safe, someone keeps leaving her creepy gifts, and all the clues point to a seedy sex club on the wrong side of town.

As the bodies start to pile up, Lexi is on a race against time to find the killer and the money, before she’s the next one in the murderer’s sights.

I didn’t know anything about this author but the blurb sounded like it could be pretty interesting and fun and so I was really pleasantly surprised with this one as I really liked it.

Lexi is a temp and finds her job really boring, that is until she finds the vice president of the business dead and that her new sexy boss isn’t really with the insurance company but an undercover policeman. She gets recruited by the joint task force because she can sort of ask questions around her job and not make people so nervous, but bodies start piling up and Lexi finds it’s a bit more scary than she thought it would be.

I really like Lexi and she is a pretty touch lady and I would suspect she would have to be with a family of cops. Adam sounds very sexy and I think that him and Lexi make a good couple. Though Solomon sounded equally as sexy and for a while I thought a love triangle was going to happen and it would be hard to choose…lol.

Though I had the bad guy pegged it took most of the book before I figured it out so I thought it was a pretty good mystery. I must say that it was a bit more sexy than normal cozies and I didn’t mind that but I know some who might. I thought this was real close to being a romantic suspense without the hard core sexy time…lol. 😉 I can’t wait to check out the next one and see what trouble Lexi might get in her new role as she isn’t a temp any more.

A Dark and Stormy Murder

An aspiring suspense novelist lands in the middle of a real crime, in the first in a captivating new series by the author of the Undercover Dish Mysteries.

Lena London’s literary dreams are coming true—as long as she can avoid any real-life villains…

Camilla Graham’s bestselling suspense novels inspired Lena London to become a writer, so when she lands a job as Camilla’s new assistant, she can’t believe her luck. Not only will she help her idol craft an enchanting new mystery, she’ll get to live rent-free in Camilla’s gorgeous Victorian home in the quaint town of Blue Lake, Indiana.

But Lena’s fortune soon changes for the worse. First, she lands in the center of small town gossip for befriending the local recluse. Then, she stumbles across one thing that a Camilla Graham novel is never without—a dead body, found on her new boss’s lakefront property.

Now Lena must take a page out of one of Camilla’s books to hunt down clues in a real crime that seems to be connected to the novelist’s mysterious estate—before the killer writes them both out of the story for good…

Lena London has landed her dream job to work as the assistant to her favorite author, but things get off to a rough start when Lena runs across a dead body. Nobody know who might have done it but one of the residents seems to be a bit notorious because his wife has gone missing and everyone thinks he was the one whodunit. So did he kill this guy Lena found?

Lena didn’t hit it off with Sam the first time they met but once she understand why he was so gruff with her they seem to get along pretty good after that. She doesn’t think that Sam killed his wife or had anything to do with this new murder but the detective in town disagrees. Lena takes it on to try and find out what happened to both Sam’s wife and the newest victim.

I like Lena and all the side characters in this one as well. This is definitely not a series to jump into in the middle or at least not right now because the storyline with what happened to Sam’s wife is still ongoing. Lena and Camilla are working together to try and figure it out.

I thought this was a very good start to this new cozy series and it had a pretty good mystery as well!
