I am excited to have Krista Davis on my blog today. She is the author of a series I just started called A Paws and Claws Mystery. I am currently almost done with book two and I am really enjoying it. 🙂
Tell me something about yourself not on your author bio.
I was once an assistant manager of a huge convention hotel in Washington, DC. It was a fabulous crazy busy job. No two days were alike. Dignitaries, movie stars, and political hot shots stayed there. We needed Secret Service clearance when the President gave a speech at the hotel and when we hosted international dignitaries. Never a boring moment. I loved that job!
What is it about the cozy genre do you love?
There are so many things I love. But my top pick is that they’re about real people. They’re about people who could be our neighbors. They’re about the butcher and the florist and the dress shop owner down the street. I love that they’re about relationships between ordinary people.
When you decide to start a cozy series, what kind of preparations do you do? I know a lot of them have themes, etc. Do you plan out a whole series?
It’s such fun to plan a new series, but it’s a lot of work. There are so many details that have to be considered. I don’t plan out a whole series. But as I create characters, I usually come up with some issues that will play out over several books. Basically, I sit down with a notebook and write down my thoughts. One idea usually leads to another.
In Wagtail, for instance, I was worried about traffic with all the dogs and cats running around. I often think how much I would like to live in a place where I could walk to stores and restaurants, or at least take a golf cart. It all fit together. There would be no pollution and no traffic noise with only golf carts in the town of Wagtail. The residents wake to birds singing instead of trucks backing up. It’s a small detail but one that cat and dog people probably appreciate.
Tell us a little about your newest book Murder Most Howl?
Holly Miller has become her grandmother’s partner at the Sugar Maple Inn on Wagtail Mountain, the premier resort for people who want to vacation with their pets. Her grandmother is finally leaving on a much deserved vacation and Holly is in charge. It seems like it should be easy but problems start right away when an employee quits and a blizzard blows into town. The town is hosting a murder mystery weekend but no one expected a real murder to take place!
Since your mystery series includes both cats and dogs I would like to know if you have a fur baby preference? (I’m a dog lover myself.)
I absolutely love cats and dogs. I have three dogs and two cats. I’m basically a sucker for anything with fur.
Who are your favorite authors/series?
Hah! Not telling. I have so many wonderful author friends that I wouldn’t dream of naming names. I do like Agatha Christie, though. Revealing that shouldn’t get me into much trouble!
Any advice for someone who might want to write a cozy?
Loads of advice! It sounds very simplistic but you should read recently released cozies to get a feel for what’s selling. Join a group like the Guppies Chapter of Sisters In Crime and ask questions. No one was born knowing these things, so don’t be embarrassed. I remember not knowing what font to use to write a manuscript.
Sometimes I think people try to pigeonhole cozies too much. They make declarations that cozies must have amateur sleuths or be in tiny towns. The truth is that there’s a big spectrum. There are some that take place in New York City and some have had professional sleuths. Don’t be fooled into thinking they’re formulaic. Cozies are as varied as the people who write them.
