Blog Tour: Stray Ally: Author Interview

Blurb:

A strange accident on the freeway, accusations of murder, and an encounter in the Idaho wilderness all propel Todd Clarke into a new friendship with a dog named Sparky. But Sparky is no ordinary dog, and there is more going on than Clarke could have imagined.

A military commander he investigated for Aryan activity and links to domestic terrorism is after him, and he’s not sure why until another chance encounter provides the answer.
With Sparky and the help of his canine friends, will he be able to figure out the Colonel’s plan and stop him in time? All Clarke knows for sure is none of it would be possible without the help of his Stray Ally.

Excerpt:

"Whatcha need? Did I miss somethin' in the supplies?"

"I need somebody to watch my dog."

"Didn't know you had a goddamn dog."

"I don't. I mean, didn't. I acquired one recently."

"A stray? Leave it behind. Better yet, put it down. There are a lot of dogs in the world. I can get you a great one when you are clear of this. My uncle breeds Labs. You can't go wrong with a Lab."

"Can't. I guess I'll get all the stuff I need at the next pet supply store."

"Don't tell me you are going on the run with a dog?"

I glanced at Sparky, sitting calmly in the passenger seat. "Not running, Wilson."

"You mean?"

"Yeah. It's time to finish this. I planned to take the fight to them, but they’re chasing me now."

"Dogs make good alarms. What kind is he?"

"A mutt. He already earned his keep. I'm leaving Riggins now. I need a hidey-hole for a few days."

"I got just the place. Head east. Sending you the coordinates now."

"Thanks Wilson."

"Clarke?"

"Yeah?"

"Good luck with the dog."

"Thanks."

This is my stop on the Stray Ally blog tour, please welcome  Troy Lambert to my blog. He was nice enough to answer my interview questions.

Tell us a something about yourself that is not in your author bio.

Starting with a tough one, huh? Well, before I became a writer, I worked many really horrible jobs. However, I am a certified motorcycle technician, and worked as a mechanic, service writer, and service manager at a few motorcycle dealers.

Do you have a specific place you like to write/music you listen to, etc?

I write at my desk in my office, which looks like a data center. I use Scrivener for at least the first draft of fiction works, because it is a different software environment with Word, which I associate mostly with work. I do listen to music, although when I am really into a story, I don’t really hear it. It just becomes background noise.

Do you have any authors that have influenced your writing?

Several. I was widely read as a child, and grew up on Asimov, Heinlein, and many of the sci-fi greats. My thriller roots come from reading Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Clive Cussler, and even Tom Clancy, to name a few.

When did you decide that you wanted to be a writer?

I think I decided about age six. I decided to pursue writing seriously in my teens, but I was discouraged by teachers and counselors, who all told me I could never make money as a writer. So I pursued several “careers” before I arrived where I am today.

How do you come by your ideas?

All over the place. Having a variety of jobs in my background allows me to draw from all of those experiences. Most of them hit me out of the blue when for some reason I am asking the magical question ‘What if?’

What made you decide to write in your current genre?

I think my muse decided for me. I have written other genres, but they all seem to end up with the same overall feel. In other words my ‘writer voice’ and themes tend to remain at least similar. I don’t think I chose to be a thriller writer, it chose me.

Have you ever started writing something and then scrapped it?

Rarely, but yes. I have a drawer full of started stories and novels that may or may not be salvageable at some point, or have a redeeming idea I can use elsewhere. Every time I write something new I learn something though, so I hope even if I abandon a project it makes me a better writer in the long run.

Tell us about your current release/or new release?

Stray Ally came to me in the middle of the night. The first scene, a strange accident on the freeway, literally woke me up. Accused of murder, an ex-soldier named Todd Clarke is propelled into a new friendship with a dog named Sparky, but he’s no ordinary dog.

A military commander Clarke investigated for Aryan activity and links to domestic terrorism is after him, and he’s not sure why, or what his plan is. With Sparky and the help of his canine friends, will he be able to figure it out in time? All Clarke knows for sure is none of it would be possible without the help of his Stray Ally.

What made you decide to write about this particular subject?

The premise is loosely based on a dark time in my life, when I really did not have many friends, and had no family support. I met a dog, adopted him by default, and he was my best friend for a long time. He passed away a number of years ago now, and this book is dedicated to his memory.

Are you currently working on a new project? If so can you tell us what it will be about?

I am. It’s a dystopian novel about a clever attack on the United States, and the resulting changes to the world after that. Tentatively it’s titled Revival It’s currently untitled.

Thanks for having me! Since I wrote this, I have decided to change the name of my Work in Progress, since Stephen King is releasing a book titled Revival in November. I haven’t come up with a new one yet.

I hope you all have a great day, and enjoy Stray Ally!

Thanks for allowing me to interview you. I wish you a lot of success with your book. I am going to go and put that your new book is untitled since you won’t be using Revival.
