It’s 1974 and Ellison Russell’s life revolves around her daughter and her art. She’s long since stopped caring about her cheating husband, Henry, and the women with whom he entertains himself. That is, until she becomes a suspect in Madeline Harper’s death. The murder forces Ellison to confront her husband’s proclivities and his crimes—kinky sex, petty cruelties and blackmail.
As the body count approaches par on the seventh hole, Ellison knows she has to catch a killer. But with an interfering mother, an adoring father, a teenage daughter, and a cadre of well-meaning friends demanding her attention, can Ellison find the killer before he finds her?
What I thought of this book.
I had seen this series around the blogosphere and I was really curious about the 1970’s setting.
Ellison swims at the country club all the time and she didn’t look around the pool for a dead body before jumping in and ends up swimming into one. It wasn’t like she expected to be swimming with a dead body and then she finds out that that woman knew her husband. She has long ago quit caring about her what her husband does and concentrates on her daughter and the arts.
She hates that her husband has drug her into his sordid world, especially when she finds out what kind of things he had been doing. The police think she is a suspect and she decides to look into things and prove them wrong, but she didn’t know what she was getting herself into. She has to do what she needs to do to protect her daughter and try and save her reputation before her mother kills her for ruining it even when it wasn’t her fault.
I like Ellison, she has spunk and she is a strong woman. It would be hard to find out all the things her husband was into and not just want to give up. Instead, she faced it head on and tried to figure out who was doing the killings. She has two men who are interested in her but she doesn’t think she is ready yet to make that move. It will be interesting to find out how she progresses from book to book.
It had an interesting mystery and I must admit I wasn’t real sure who the killer was and that doesn’t happen often. So I like it when it does.
If you like cozy mysteries then I think you will end up liking this one. 🙂
The Narrator:
Callie Beaulieu narrates this one and she does a really good job. This is my second series with her as a narrator and I think she has the perfect voice for Ellison.
I think I have a book from this series. It gets me when I have so many books and so little time to read them. LOL
I know, that is my problem, so many books so little time. 🙂
I’ve seen these around as well. I can’t imagine swimming into a dead body. That would be a serious shock. Glad you enjoyed this one!
Yeah, that would be horrid.
I haven’t checked this series out. I need to but I need to get out of my funk (I thought it was over but haven’t picked up a book this week) *sigh*
I hope you enjoy it when your out of your funk. 🙂
I’ve read the next 3 books in the series but somehow haven’t actually gotten to the first book! I think when it first came out I didn’t feel particularly interested in the setting and didn’t bother to get it. Now I need to add it to my list as I’ve really enjoyed the others! If you have time check out Julie Mulhern’s Pinterest boards. She pins her inspiration for clothes or places or really anything she mentions in the book and it’s fascinating to see the original!
I have the next couple in the series so I can’t wait to give them a try. 🙂
Glad you liked this one, I’m a big fan of the series. I hear there’s a book 5 coming in May.
I am glad you like the series, I can’t wait to get to the rest of them.
I do like it when ya don’t solve the mystery right away. Sounds good.
It was an interesting one, loved the 70’s setting.
