Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren’t for the magic…
When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.
Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta’s magic circles.
The Masters of the Dead, necromancers who can control vampires, and the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, blame each other for a series of bizarre killings—and the death of Kate’s guardian may be part of the same mystery. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she’s way out of her league—but she wouldn’t have it any other way…

This year Barb and I have decided to tackle a series along with our other monthly buddy read. This year we are buddy reading the Kate Daniel series. So go check and see what she thought of book one over at Booker T’s Farm after you get done here! 🙂

Here is what I thought

So last year we decided that this year we would read this series, I have already read this book but it’s been a few years so I knew I would need to reread it and refresh my memory. I was surprised at home much of it I remember though I couldn’t remember how it ended.

Kate is a down on her luck mercenary in a world with the paranormal roams because of magic. When her guardian is killed she is asked to find out who done it and she wants to know so she takes the job. It takes her into some dangerous territory and she meets the Shifter King who could snap her into if he wanted too.

I like Kate because she is sarcastic and fun even though at times I thought she was a little dumb to be so cocky around the Curran and even she thought that at times. I know she was trying to prove she wasn’t scared of him but he wasn’t so curious about her he could have just killed her and then end of book series. 🙂 Curran is my favorite character though because he is just enigmatic and I can’t wait to learn more about him.

I think this first book can be a little confusing because we are learning the world and what is happening but I am sure the more we get into the series the better it will become. I liked the mystery in it which works well for me since I like mysteries. 🙂

Can’t wait to try book two and see what happens. If you like Urban Fantasy books you will probably enjoy this one.

The Narrator

Renee Raudman does a very good job with this series.

  1. I just came from reading Barb’s review and it seems you both got the same things out of this one. I do remember enjoying this one. I’ll be following along as you share each book. Fun idea!

  2. I love this series so much. You can really see how Ilona Andrews writing teams comes into their own with this series. Great review. I can’t wait to revisit this series through your reviews (I just did a full relisten to the series last year, but I can never get enough of this series). Here Kitty, Kitty. 🙂
