In Salem, Massachusetts, there are secret everywhere--even in the furniture. . .
When Lee Barrett spots the same style oak bureau she once had as a child on the WICH-TV show, Shopping Salem, she rushes to the antiques shop and buys the piece. Just like the beloved bureau she lost in a fire, this one has secret compartments. It also comes with an intriguing history--it was purchased in an estate sale from a home where a famous local murder took place.
The day after the bureau is delivered, Lee returns to the antiques shop and finds the owner dead. The police suspect the shop owner's unscrupulous business partner, but Lee wonders if the murder is connected to her new furniture. At least part of the answer may be revealed through a mirror in the bureau, tarnished and blackened, allowing Lee to tap into her psychic visions. Using this bureau of investigation, Lee may be able to furnish her policeman beau with the evidence needed to catch the killer--before the next one to be shut up is her. . .
Third book in the Witch City Mysteries was just as delightful as the others.
What I thought of this book.
Things are going pretty good for Lee, school is out so she decides to take a summer job helping her aunt’s boyfriend work on his plays. She has also got her own space above her aunt and it has it’s own entry in the back for visitor to make it more private for her. She needs to furnish it so goes to an antique store looking for a bureau that matched the one she had that got ruined in the fire from the last book.
She is working as his set designer and helping him find pieces of furniture, etc for the plays. So since she met the nice lady at the antique store she decides to go back and find some more things for herself as well as for the plays. She bumps into a guy on her way into the store and not long after that finds the owner dead.
Her boyfriend Pete is the town’s detective and he is called into this case and is worried about Lee. Lee prefers to leave the cop stuff to her boyfriend though she usually gets brought into the middle of things as she is a scryer. She sees things in black mirrors and it usually helps her figure out what happened. Then there is River her witch friend who is always reading her cards and warning her about things.
When Lee got her bureau it also comes with a mystery that is entwined into the present day mystery as the lady who owned it was killed and Lee finds out through scrying why she might have been killed as well as what might have happened too the shop owner. She just wasn’t sure who killed them.
I like the characters in this series. Lee is pretty level-headed and deals with the scrying part of her life pretty well for just finding out she could do it. Pete is adorable and Lee and him have a cute relationship and she is ready to turn it up a notch, especially now that she has her own space. Her aunt (whose name is escaping me) is a lot of fun as well and her boyfriend is pretty funny. Orion is not your ordinary cat and that shows up a lot in this one as he is a witches cat. 🙂
Overall, I really enjoyed this one and can’t wait for more from this series to come on audio. If you like cozies then you will probably like this one.
I really enjoy C.S.E Cooney’s narration of this story, she does a great job.
