DI Nikki Galena faces a personal challenge which will stretch her to the limit. She must fulfil her father’s dying wish and discover who the mysterious Eve is. Meanwhile a dead drug dealer is found on an abandoned airfield that the locals say is haunted. The trail of both mysteries will lead to the most shocking discovery of Nikki’s career and put her whole team in mortal danger.
Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the shocking ending.
THE DETECTIVE DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms and her own family destroyed. She’s tough on the criminals who she thinks did this to her.
HER PARTNER DS Joseph Easter is the squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname “Holy Joe” belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.
THE SETTING The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote Fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.

Here is what I thought

This series has fast become one of my favorite British crime series and it features DI Nikki Galena and DS Joseph Easter.

In this one Nikki’s father has died but leaves her a name that she doesn’t know, Eve. Who is Eve? Why does her father want her to find her? She doesn’t have a lot of time to dwell on that when a case comes up. A drug dealer turns up dead on an airfield which leads the team to something far more frightening than just who killed the drug dealer. They find a underground tunnel and a place with a lot of bodies.

I really like the characters in this series. DI Galena is pretty hard core, she has seen a lot and had to deal with a lot so she is pretty tough on criminals, especially ones that deal with drugs. DS Easter has his own share of demons as he use to be in the military. He is just now getting to know his daughter who is almost all grown up and things are going pretty good with that because he has had a little help from Nikki.

The mystery surrounding the drug dealer and the underground lair was great and finding out who Eve is was a bit of a surprise so I really enjoyed this one! I can’t wait to get the next one!

Recommend if you like

British crime novels, characters with a bit of a dark past, and a good mystery.

The Narrator

When it comes to British crime novels Henrietta Meire has fast become a favorite narrator. I just really like her voice and after four books she has become DI Galena.
