My name is Mac Brennan and that's the only thing I can remember about myself. Not why I woke up in a dumpster. Not why my right arm is as black as pitch and covered in glowing red tattoos, and certainly not why a vicious death cult is after me.

Actually, that last part isn't true. I know why the death cult is after me. It's because I saved that damned girl from them. I didn't know who she was at the time, but I'd have done it anyway. I just don't like it when girls get beat up, call me old fashioned.

Still, I can tell she's hiding something behind those devilish eyes, and if I want to find out what it is, I'll have to help her.

My name is Mac Brennan. I have no memory, and I'm a werewolf-hunting, hellfire-flinging version of Faust himself.

What I thought of this book.

While listening to this all I could think of is that this author must be a fan of Jim Butcher cause it really had that sort of feel to me. Not that that is a bad thing cause I love The Dresen Files. πŸ™‚ It just sort of falls flat here.

Mac Brennan wakes up in a dumpster and has no memories except what his name is or at least what he thinks it is. His arm is black and it has red tattoos on it and he has no idea how it happened or what it is.

When he helps a young woman get away from some men, at first she is nice to him then she sees his black arm and throws him out. Apparently, he has made some sort of pact with a demon and that is why his arm is in the shape it’s in.

When the thugs come back and he helps her again he finds out they are werewolves. Well, if demons exist he figures why not werewolves. No matter how much he tries to keep the Β lady out of trouble she ends up getting kidnapped.

Mac is a Cursed, what everyone calls a person who made a deal with a demon for power. The only thing is he doesn’t remember doing it. It gave him lots of power and seemed to turn him into a werewolf hunter since they took the girl. Now people are trying to kill him. Who knew saving a lady could get you killed.

For a guy with no memory, he sure is a cocky fellow. Hey, I’m Mac Brennan. My name is Mac Brennan I can do anything…blah blah. If I have to hear how he is Mac Brennan one more time I might reach into the book and strangle him. πŸ™

This one has five CD’s and I couldn’t make it go faster like I like to do and felt my mind wondering during the last half of the fourth CD. Sighs. πŸ™

I had high hopes for this one but for me it just fell flat. Though it seems to have a lot of decent reviews goodreads so if you like UF type books you might try it as it could just be me. πŸ™‚

The Narrator:

I think I found a new favorite male narrator!!! James Patrick Cronin rocks! Me not enjoying this book as much as I hoped had nothing to do with the awesome narration. πŸ™‚

It’s a shame when a book doesn’t fulfil your expectations – it seemed such a cool premise. Of course, the one thing the Dresden Files has in spades is dollops of self-deprecating humour, which I gather isn’t evident in this one…

Yeah, I am so glad I did’t ask for the rest of the series to review. No, not as funny as Dresden!

    • Stormi

I am too and this one was just a big ole miss…lol. I think I might have survived it better if he didn’t love the sound of his own name…lol.

Well yay for finding a new narrator! Didn’t we meet him at the audies after party at BEA? I think he was the drunk hugger that was nice and hilarious. Lol!

I do think I’ll stop the hook though, so far I haven’t fallen in love with Dresden files and if this is a poor imitation… Nah.

    • Stormi

No, that is not him. Though the guy you’re talking about is named Patrick but not this one. πŸ™‚ He was pretty funny though…lol. I will always remember that!

You don’t love the Dresden Files…OMG…you tried the audio version? It’s the best James Marster (Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is the narrator and he is great…lol. I think I like it mainly because he narrates…hehehe. (The only narrator I don’t listen to on a faster speed!)

I’m a huge Dresden Files fan too. I’m sorry this one didn’t work out for you. I wonder if they get better as you go through the series. I’ve read a lot of UF series that book one is just okay, but then the series gets amazing a few books in. I mean the first Kate Daniels book won’t knock you out of your seat, but each book is better than the last and now it is a favorite series. I would be annoyed about they cockiness of a guy who doesn’t remember anything. Decisions, decisions… LOL
