For ten years Lucy has enjoyed her job poring over rare tomes of literature for the Harvard Library, but she has not enjoyed the demands of her family’s social whorl or her sort-of-engagement to the staid son of her father’s law partner. But when her ten-year relationship implodes, Lucy realizes that the plot of her life is in need of a serious rewrite.
Calling on her aunt Ellen, Lucy hopes that a little fun in the Outer Banks sun—and some confections from her cousin Josie’s bakery—will help clear her head. But her retreat quickly turns into an unexpected opportunity when Aunt Ellen gets her involved in the lighthouse library tucked away on Bodie Island.
Lucy is thrilled to land a librarian job in her favorite place in the world. But when a priceless first edition Jane Austen novel is stolen and the chair of the library board is murdered, Lucy suddenly finds herself ensnared in a real-life mystery—and she’s not so sure there’s going to be a happy ending....
How can you not like a cozy mystery that involves a library! 🙂
What I thought of this book.
Lucy loved her job at the Harvard Library, but after deciding her life really wasn’t go anywhere and ending a long relationship she needed a change. She called her aunt in Outer Banks and gets a job as the assistant librarian for the Lighthouse library and she is super excited.
Not long after she gets there though her excitement is short lived as someone was murdered and her aunt is one of the first accused. Then the famous Austen book collection starts disappearing one by one. Who killed the library director and who is stealing the books.
So suspicions lands on Lucy so she has to try and find out who done it before her or her aunt lands in jail.
Lucy is a nice character and I felt a bit sorry for her as she is so excited to work with her aunt at the library. Then everything just starts going downhill. I can see a bit of a love triangle forming but it might not. The mayor is an old crush from her youth and she has started seeing a policeman who is working the case. She has been to dinner with both so it will be interesting to see which one wins out. I personally like the mayor. 🙂
Over all I thought By Book or By Crook was a fun cozy and I can’t wait to see what kind of trouble Lucy will get in next time. If your into cozy mysteries then you will probably enjoy this one.
Elise Arsenault is a new to me narrator and she did a decent job. Her voices could have been better but not everyone is good at that. I listened on Fast on windows media player and it made things go nicely. My favorite narrators are those who can be listened to at a faster speed and you can understand them clearly. 🙂
