Expert muffin baker Merry Wynter is finally ready to turn her passion into a career. But when a dead body is found on her property, she’s more worried about cooking up an alibi…
Merry is making a fresh start in small-town Autumn Vale, New York, in the mansion she’s inherited from her late uncle, Melvin. The house is run-down and someone has been digging giant holes on the grounds, but with its restaurant-quality kitchen, the place has potential for her new baking business. She even has her first client—the local retirement home.
Unfortunately, Merry soon finds that quite a few townsfolk didn’t like Uncle Mel, and she has inherited their enmity as well as his home. Local baker Binny Turner and her crazy brother, Tom, blame Melvin for their father’s death, and Tom may be the one vandalizing her land. But when Tom turns up dead in one of the holes in her yard, Merry needs to prove she had nothing to do with his death—or her new muffin-making career may crumble before it starts...
What I thought of this book.
Merry had inherited her uncles castle in Autumn Vale but she was never interested in going to check it out. She just wanted to sell it but nobody seemed to want to buy it. She was in need of a place to stay as her job wasn’t going well so she decides to check it out.
At first she didn’t get a very big welcome as a newcomer because her uncle wasn’t not well liked. Also some thought he had killed Rusty Turner. Then Tom ends up murdered in on of the strange holes in her back yard and she tries to find out what happened.
On her first day there she gets roped into making muffins for a senior center and fast becomes friends with the lady in charge. Then Tom is found dead in one of the strange holes in her backyard and she becomes a suspect as she was seen arguing with him the day before, so she investigates.
She soon becomes acquainted with a lot of people in Autumn Vale and soon becomes pretty friendly with a lot of them and they open up to her about Tom and even her Uncle. She is curious to know more about her uncle and what happened to him.
The mystery is very good and she sort of stumbles on to the killer and what they had done and as always gets herself in a spot of trouble.
Bran New Death is the first book int the Merry Muffin Mystery and leaves you curious about a few things so I hope that it roles over into the next book which I can’t wait to get.
Merry is an interesting character and I look forward to learning more about her. Her friend Shiloh seems to be sticking around and she is interesting as well and look forward to more of her and Jack Miguel as they got a bit of a budding romance going on. There are a lot of characters in this story and it will be nice to get to know them as I listen to each story.
If you are interested in cozy mysteries then you will probably enjoy this series.
This was my first time listening to Margaret Strom and she did a good job overall but her male voices need a bit of work as they just sounded really funny. I would still give her another listen though.
