A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it's only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer's twisted work becomes clear. Sara's ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation -- a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later. But he's got more than a sadistic serial killer on his hands, for the county's sole female detective, Lena Adams -- the first victim's sister -- wants to serve her own justice. But it is Sara who holds the key to finding the killer. A secret from her past could unmask the brilliantly malevolent psychopath .. or mean her death.

Here is what I thought

One thing I am learning is that Slaughter knows how to write a very dark and disturbing crime novel! I like it!

There are a lot of things that go on in this book but I don’t want to spoil so I will just try and hit a few highlights.

The small town is turned upside down when Sarah Layton the towns pediatrician and coroner finds a blind woman who had been brutally attacked and it was to late for her to save her.

That woman was detective Lena’s sister which of course you know she is going to be on a man hunt for whoever did it even if the Sheriff tries to stop her. Then a young woman goes missing and is soon found and it seems the same thing was done to her that was done to the blind woman (can’t remember her name).

Sarah can’t stand back and do nothing as she feels a burden to figure out who is doing this since she found the first lady. She is also having troubles getting over her ex-husband who happens to be the sheriff.

Sarah will have to expose a secret she has been keeping even from her ex-husband as it could be relevant to the case.

I really liked all the characters in this novel and can’t wait to get to know them all more. Sarah has a hard job as coroner especially when she knows the victim. It seems kind of weird that the pediatrician would be the coroner. She has her flaws but it makes her seem real. The same goes for Lena, who is a pretty tough character as a female detective. It would be so hard to try and figure out who killed your sister and not let a bit of blind rage get in there. Jeffery is a pretty decent character as the sheriff and has his flaws too like having an affair which is what killed his marriage when he is still in love with Sarah. He feels a lot for those involved and so even though he is flawed I liked him.

It has a pretty decent mystery surrounding who the killer was though I guessed it about 60% into the book. If you like a disturbing crime mystery then I suggest trying this one!

*trigger warning for talks about rape.

The Narrator

This was my first time listening to the narration of Kathleen Early and I thought she did a pretty decent job.
