A dying wish. A secret world. Can this grieving investigator stay on the right track?
PI Kelly Pruett is determined to make it on her own. And juggling clients at her late father’s detective agency, a controlling ex, and caring for a deaf daughter was never going to be easy. So she takes it as a good sign when a letter left by her dad ties into an unsolved case of a young woman struck by a train.
Hunting down the one person who can prove the mysterious death was not just a drunken accident, Kelly discovers this witness is in no condition to talk. And the closer she gets to the truth the longer her list of sleazy suspects with murderous motives grows. Each clue exposes another layer of the victim's steamy double life.
On a crash course with a killer, she must piece together the puzzle of what really happened to the victim that rainy night, before her own fate is sealed and she loses everything near and dear, including her life.
Here is what I thought
Derailed was from a new to me author and though there were times I wasn’t swept up into the story (I think it was me not the story) I did really enjoy it.
Kelly’s father was a PI and she worked with him and he was going to show her the ropes but he died before that happened. She took over his business but never did anything major just mainly small things, but one day a woman walked in looking for her father.
She had a letter from her father that if this particular woman ever came in asking for help that she was suppose to help her. So when she wanted help finding out what happened to her daughter she couldn’t turn her down. What Kelly didn’t know was how danger looking into things was going to get.
It seems that Brooke was not he person her parents thought she was and she was living a very different life and it was a life that ended up getting her killed. The more that Kelly digs into the things the more danger she ends up in herself.
Kelly was a decent main character who is divorced with a deaf daughter and so working at the PI business was the only thing she knew to make a living. Her ex helps with their daughter and he doesn’t like her taking the dangerous job and still has feelings for her but Kelly is moving on. It was Jeff’s fault they were divorced because he cheated. So you get a lot of the dynamics between Kelly and her ex in the story as well.
Overall I enjoyed the story and was really curious as to who killed Brooke and I think if you like mysteries you might enjoy this one.
