Grandeur and opulence are everything in the famed New Orleans Garden District where pets are family and no bling is too big. Opening Furry Godmother, pet boutique and organic treat bakery, is Lacy Marie Crocker’s dream come true--until the glitter gun used to make her Shih Tzu tutus becomes a murder weapon. And Lacy becomes public enemy #1.
Now Detective Jack Oliver is hounding Lacy, and her Furry Godmother investor wants out before his name is tarnished by association. To make matters worse, a string of jewel heists with suspicious ties to the murder case has New Orleans residents on edge. To save her dream, Lacy must take a stand, put her keen eyes to work, and unravel what really happened at her shop that night. But can Lacy sniff out the killer cat burglar in time to get her tail-raising designs on the catwalk?
Witty and whimsical, Cat Got Your Diamonds, the first in a new cozy series by Julie Chase, will be the cat's meow for fans of Rita Mae Brown and Miranda James.

I squinted through my freshly cleaned shop window at a lively group of women snapping selfies with the Magazine Street sign in front of a New Orleans police car and broken-in storefront.

What I thought of this book

Lacy dropped out of med school to go to fashion school and became a designer for pets. 🙂

Lacy likes her job even if her mother thinks it’s a step way down from where she could be but Lacy doesn’t see it as that she is doing something she loves. She owns a store that makes designer clothing and organic foods for pets. Things were going pretty good until she catches someone in her store and then that man ends up dead. With only her prints on the murder weapon, she becomes the prime suspect.

Smug detective Jack Oliver doesn’t mind letting her know that he thinks she is a suspect and they have some fun clashes. He tells her to leave things to the professionals but as long as he thinks she is a suspect she won’t leave things alone. Especially now that the guy who pays her lease has decided she is too much of a risk because of what has happened. If she can’t find out who done it then she might not be able to pay her lease and there goes her growing little business.

When it comes to who might have wanted Miguel dead there are a few. Especially when she finds out he was a thief and had two girlfriends. The more Lacy tries to figure out what has happened the more things start happening to her and her business gets ransacked. Someone is warning her away, but she won’t give up. Someone wants something and they think she has it, but she hasn’t a clue what it is.

So I will admit to not knowing exactly who the killer was but I did guess another part of it and that had to do with Lacy’s shop, but part of that surprised me a bit too!

I liked Lacy as she took a risk going after something she loved. It takes a lot to quit medical school to go to fashion school and then decide to design pet clothing. She is a little headstrong when it came to going against the detective but I think I might be that way myself. I did think she was a little gung ho about going after whoever was doing this and did great under pressure when some bad things happened.

I really liked Jack and I think he really liked frustrating Lacy, but in the end he really was trying to protect her from harm.  The other side characters were a lot of fun as well.

This was a really good start to a new cozy mystery series and I enjoyed it a lot.
