Master storyteller Stephen King presents the classic #1 national bestseller of the ultimate vehicle of terror!
“This is the story of a lover’s triangle…It was bad from the start. And it got worse in a hurry.”
It’s love at first sight for high school student Arnie Cunningham when he and his best friend Dennis Guilder spot the dilapidated 1958 red-and-white Plymouth Fury for sale—dubbed “Christine” by its original cantankerous owner—rusting away on a front lawn of their suburban Pennsylvania neighborhood. Dennis knows that Arnie’s never had much luck in the looks or popularity department, or really taken an interest in owning a car . . . but Christine quickly changes all that. Arnie suddenly has the newfound confidence to stick up for himself, going as far as dating the most beautiful girl at Libertyville High—transfer student Leigh Cabot—even as a mysteriously restored Christine systematically and terrifyingly consumes every aspect of Arnie’s life. Dennis and Leigh soon realize that they must uncover the awful truth behind a car with a horrifying and murderous history. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and heaven help anyone who gets in Christine’s way…

Welcome to Barb and I’s very first Retro Horror review. This is a post we are going to do every two months and even though we are posting on the same day we are posting about different books. We both wanted to get into some older horror and thought this would be a fun way to do it. So please go check out what Barb is reading at Booker T’s Farm!

Here is what I thought

I think out of the 5 older Stephen King books that I have read Christine has to be my favorite one! What an evil car she was!

Arnie sees an old car one day that he just has to have but his friend Dennis has a bad feeling about it. Arnie puts a down payment on it because he doesn’t have the whole 250 dollars until he gets paid. The old man selling Christine is creepy and weird and he is giving Dennis the bad guy vibes but Arnie doesn’t see anything but the car.

Not long after getting the car it seems that Arnie starts to change. He is a nerdy guy with a serious case of acne but it starts to clear up, and his attitude changes. He gets into fights with his mother about the car as she didn’t want him to have one yet, but he is making money and bought it so he thinks there is not much she can do. He keeps the car at Darnell’s but even that guy isn’t really on the up and up making Arnie do some running around for him as payment for keeping his car.

Dennis who is telling the story about Arnie and the car notices more and more that Arnie is not himself. Also, he has notice how well the car is looking and can’t see how Arnie is paying to make her look so pristine. Then Arnie gets some guys expelled from school and they want to get even with him and they beat up Christine. That car is so bad off there is no way it will ever run again or so people think.

Also Arnie gains a girlfriend which really doesn’t go well with Christine as she is a bit of a jealousy car. Arnie starts to notice some things about Christine and the fact that it will only play a 50’s music station and sometimes has a funny smell. He also sees the previous owner who has recently died, but figures it’s nothing. He just loves that car to much to care.

As I mentioned before the car gets wrecked by those guys but somehow she seems to put herself back to pristine condition again and this time she is out for revenge and when Arnie is not around she goes on a killing spree, but the cops think it’s Arnie.

Dennis and Leigh, who was Arnie’s girlfriend, decide they have to try and free Arnie from the car but it’s not going to be an easy process.

Arnie was a decent teen who turns out to be very nasty towards the end and not himself at all. I really liked Dennis and Leigh and so I was rooting for them to be able to stop things.

I didn’t find this to be two gory or scary but there was some creepy parts to it. I mean when they realize for the first time that there is nobody behind the wheel it’s a bit chilling and creepy! I watched the movie when I was young but it’s been so long, so I would like to find it to watch again now that I have read the book.

Overall, I really thought this was a cool read and my only real complain is that if I had to listen to the word ‘Shitter’ one more time I was going to go crazy. It was the most used word in the book and sometimes several times in a small span of dialogue and was just redundant.

I would recommend this to those who are avid fans of Stephen King or just getting into his books.

The Narrator

I think what really made this audio was the narrator! I just loved Holter Graham and he did an awesome job with this one! He has a voice that made it easy to listen to this at 2x speed and still understand everything he said which helped me get through this 19 hour listen! 4 stars for narration!
