Right as I'm about to die, I realize all the myths are fake. There's no white light at the end of a tunnel. My life isn't flashing before my eyes.
All I can think about is how much I want to live.
I moved to New York City a month ago to become the best journalist the world had ever seen. To find the greatest stories never told. And now here I am Henry Parker, twenty-four years old and weary beyond rational thought, a bullet one trigger pull from ending my life.
I can't run. Running is all Amanda and I have done for the past seventy-two hours. And I'm tired. Tired of knowing the truth and not being able to tell it.
Five minutes ago I thought I had the story all figured out.
I knew that both of these men one an FBI agent, the other an assassin wanted me dead, but for very different reasons.
If I die tonight more people will die tomorrow.
Here is what I thought
One day Henry Parker had it all, he was working for a fancy newspaper and ready to become that great reporter. Then he was given an assignment to go and interview a man. Things are kind of strange but after his interview he hears the lady of the house scream and he isn’t real sure what to do, but he goes back and finds a man holding a gun on them. Things happen and the next thing he knows he is on the run for killing a cop but has no clue what exactly happened.
As Henry is on the run he tries to piece together what exactly happened because if that man he shot was a cop he was a dirty one. There is also someone else after him, someone who thinks he took something from that house and he has no clue what it is. In trying to get away he accidently involves Amanda a woman he was just hitching a ride from but she seems to believe his story and wants to help. So now they are both on the run from a policeman who wants revenge and a hitman who wants the package that Henry doesn’t have.
It’s a story of a lifetime if he can survive long enough to tell it!
Henry is a decent character though you really don’t know a lot about him. You get bits and pieces about him as he is on the run but I figure we will learn more about him as the series progresses. He does have a will to live and the spunk to keep him going and he and Amanda both get in some scary situations. I am not sure about Amanda though because I am not sure if I would want to hang out with a man who lies to me at first and gets in a situation where a man wants to kill me! There is romance in the air but I could have done without it.
Overall, I thought that The Mark while confusing at first turned into a pretty decent first in series book. I just wonder how the author can top the rest of the series when he puts his MC in such a situation in the first book. Seems like any other story might not be quiet as fast paced but I will see as I have them to listen too!
First time with Adam Verner and it took me a while to warm up to him. I did listen to it on fast speed so that helped as he doesn’t have a fast paced narration. Though after about half way through I started to enjoy listening to him.
