In her thrilling new series, the New York Times bestselling author of the Lady Julia Grey mysteries, returns once more to Victorian England…and introduces intrepid adventuress Veronica Speedwell.
London, 1887. As the city prepares to celebrate Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, Veronica Speedwell is marking a milestone of her own. After burying her spinster aunt, the orphaned Veronica is free to resume her world travels in pursuit of scientific inquiry—and the occasional romantic dalliance. As familiar with hunting butterflies as she is fending off admirers, Veronica wields her butterfly net and a sharpened hatpin with equal aplomb, and with her last connection to England now gone, she intends to embark upon the journey of a lifetime.
But fate has other plans, as Veronica discovers when she thwarts her own abduction with the help of an enigmatic German baron with ties to her mysterious past. Promising to reveal in time what he knows of the plot against her, the baron offers her temporary sanctuary in the care of his friend Stoker—a reclusive natural historian as intriguing as he is bad-tempered. But before the baron can deliver on his tantalizing vow to reveal the secrets he has concealed for decades, he is found murdered. Suddenly Veronica and Stoker are forced to go on the run from an elusive assailant, wary partners in search of the villainous truth.
What I thought of this book.
Veronica is a wordly lady who loves to travel and doesn’t care much about what anyone thinks. She studies butterflies and now that her spinster aunt has died she can resume doing as she pleased.
Then all of a sudden a man tries to harm Veronica and another man comes to tell her she is in danger and must go with him. Because she has nothing better to do she decides to travel with the man, who introduces her to Stoker. Max asked Stoker to look over Veronica while he takes care of some business and then he ends up dead.
Veronica and Stoker are not sure what is going on but they take off together as Stoker wants to keep Veronica safe even though she think there is no reason for it. Though the more they look into her past and who her parents are the more they believe she is in a lot of danger.
Veronica is one of those fun characters who doesn’t care for formalities of the time. She believes she can take care of herself though she doesn’t seem to mind traveling around with Stoker. 😉 She is inquisitive and quirky and I really liked her. Stoker is very brooding but he has had a hard life starting at a young age. As the book progressed we find out a little more and more about him. I really liked him as well and together they are a lot of fun. I do hope there will be a romance between the two in coming books.
I really enjoyed some of the secondary characters and hope that they are in the next book as well!
I can’t wait to read/listen to the next book but I just seen it doesn’t come out until 2017! Sighs.
If you like historical mysteries with quirky and fun characters then you will probably enjoy this one.
This was the first time I have listened to narrator Angele Masters and I really enjoyed her. She did the voices for both male and female very well. I did listen to it at 1.5 speed as I am use to listening to them faster and her voice works great at a faster speed. 🙂
I don’t have an audio sample since I bought this one and didn’t get it from a review source but you can check it out at audibles.com. 🙂
